Day 01 - ILC - Unit 01
1. Recapping the Information from Your Notes:
I have learned about the life of a French soldier who is one of the most important men in European history. He was born in 1769 on an island of France. When he was 10 years old, his father sent him to a military school. In most of his classes, he was not a good student, but he excelled in Maths, military science. When he was 16, he started his military career which brought him fame, power, victories and finally defeated. He became general when he was 24, and several years later, he became French emperor. He was a brilliant leader, all his soldiers were ready to die for him. He controlled most of Europe, but England, Russia, Austrian fought against him. When he attacked Russia he lost most of his army. He died alone and deserted by his friends, families when he was 51.
2. Expanding on the information in the Talk:
a. Napoleon was a great man.
According to the information I got in the talk, Napoleon gained the resounding success in his military career when he was so young. I don't think there was anybody achieved what he did at his age. At least he was a great man in his career.
b. It would be impossible today for a person like Napoleon to become powerful enough to conquer and rule so many countries.
In modern ages, most countries are operating within do.. system in which the power doesn't concentrate on one person. Moreover, there is a lot of large organizations with the global presence greatly influencing on their member nations. Therefore, it is believed that the change for a person to emerge as a conquer is impossible.
c. The only way a country can be safe is to have a powerful military to protect itself.
The modern world is running in a way totally different from Napoleon's age. It is controlled not only by military force but also soft power such as the economy, politic, media, science, technology, etc. For instance, Switzerland does not focus their national potential in developing armed force, but with its financial capacity and political influence, it is one of the most peaceful countries in the world.
d. Every young man and woman should be required to do at least two years of military service for his or her country.
For those, either male or female, who have no family burden such as taking care early parents, being a primary breadwinner should sign up to the army force at least two years. Participating military service is not only vital during the war but also extremely essential in peace that encourages the wave of patriotism and strengthens solidarity. Moreover, it is the best way to increase the physical nation.
